"Great Caesar's Ghost, Kent! Get That Story!"

Intern scandal? Haven't we heard enough about Bill Clinton? But wait, it's not Bill Clinton.

With the Kerry campaign racking up primary victories the way professional bowlers knock down pins, his presidential nomination seemed unstoppable only yesterday. But this morning's Drudge Report hints at a political bombshell that could render the race far from foregone conclusion.

According to Drudge, several major news organizations including Time magazine, ABC News, and the Washington Post are conducting "serious investigations" into the circumstances under which a woman—formerly with the Associated Press—recently "fled the country, reportedly at the prodding of Kerry."

These events, Drudge alleges, are widely known in the upper echelons of the Democratic party and are a key reason that perennial primary loser Howard Dean remains in the race and has turned increasingly aggressive against Kerry in recent days. Drudge also cites three reporters who claim that General Wesley Clark had an off-the-record conversation with a dozen reporters early this week in which he stated that "Kerry will implode over an intern issue." (So much for off-the-record conversations ...)

Will John Kerry become the next Gary Hart? Will Howard Dean actually get to go "to Washington to take back the White House! Heyaaargh!" Would an infidelity scandal change your views about Kerry's eligibility for the presidency?

At this point, the purported "facts" are little more than rumors, but if they prove to be more substantial than that, Janet Jackson's exposed nipple may finally be overshadowed by a bigger story.

Update: Alexandra Poltier, the woman alleged to have been involved with Kerry, has denied the story. Via In Search of Utopia.
