Say goodbye, wires: New Wozniak venture promises 100 sq. mile wireless networks

A new company founded by former Apple Computer guru Steve Wozniak has apparently developed technology that allows people to create wireless networks extending from one mile to 100 square miles.

Wi-Fi connections offer limited range. Cellular provides more distance at greater expense. Now, a new company founded by former Apple Computer guru Steve Wozniak claims to have developed technology that allows people to create wireless networks extending from one mile to 100 square miles:

[T]he wOzNet technology uses standard 900-Mhz radio frequencies, but combines low battery power usage with the ability to transmit a small amount of data over longer distances ... individual wOzNets can be moved from location to location, like from home to the park, and can tie into other individual wOzNets to create a community watch network, Wozniak said ...

Furthermore, the wOzNet technology would employ devices that would permit some form of two-way instant person-to-person communications. However, Wozniak and Woz executives wouldn't divulge what form those devices would take and exactly how they would work.

Today's New York Times also features an article describing Wozniak's new technology venture, describing it as designed for transmitting small amounts of data at relatively low data rates through radio-busy environments subject to interference. The alleged 20,000 bits per second data rate on the 900 mhz frequency would rule out instant on internet access for PCs but may be fast enough to enable devices that track a child's, a car's, or a pet's location and can exchange instant messages.
