Taking Productivity—And My Avatar—To The Next Level

It's important to honor and learn from the latest groundbreaking research.

Dear Boss:

You've always been an enlightened leader so I'm sure you'll want to know that research at the University of Utrecht has found that employees who play video games at work feel better about their jobs.

The team evaluated 60 employees in a Dutch insurance firm and measured changes in work and job attitudes changes when they were allowed to play games. And guess what, Boss, they preferred pushing joysticks to pushing paper! The research team believes that playing games might positively change employee productivity, improve job satisfaction, enhance strategic thinking, and reduce absenteeism too.

I know you want us to work more efficiently, Boss, so I'm sure you'll approve my expense report for the order of 60 Xbox consoles for our team. It's a small price to pay for increasing our company's production in this down market, don't you agree?

And here's an added benefit: We'll have a better company softball team because playing video games may increase aggression and improve eye-hand coordination and spatial visual skills!

Thanks again for your continued thoughtfulness on these matters. It's a pleasure to work for you, and it will be an even greater pleasure to play Mortal Kombat against you.

Sincerely,

Ron

P.S. Salary increases, stock option grants, and extended vacations may also improve employee satisfaction—I'll send you the latest research on them soon.
