Are PCs "PC"? Los Angeles Finds A Worm In Every Apple (And Every Dell)

A county promotes tolerance in networking, but not the kind you might think.

A Los Angeles county official wrote vendors this month to complain that the terms "master" and "slave" on video equipment and computers could offend some users and may even violate the county's non-discrimination policy.

"Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," according to an e-mail sent to vendors on Nov. 18. The email asks manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to change or remove any labels on components "that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature."

Why stop there? Let's also eliminate:

1. Floppy disks — Offensive to the impotent.
2. Mounting hard disks — Just say no!
3. Colocation — Not before the wedding.
4. Computer commands — Shouldn't they be "requests"?
5. Cursors — Watch that tongue.
6. Hot spots — Has Dell no shame?
7. Backend systems — L.A. don't swing that way, baby.
8. CD burners — Encourage arson. Haven't they had enough of that in LA?

Did I miss any candidates? Let's keep Los Angeles safe and sound! Tip to city officials: The name City of Angels could also offend atheists. Better get cracking on a new one.
