Shaken, But Not Stirred: iTunes and Win 2000 Pro Don't Mix

Apple provides one more reason to buy a Macintosh—but some Windows users aren't amused.

Apple is investigating what a number of Windows 2000 Pro users have already learned the hard way: iTunes for Windows crashes their computers. A colleague of mine who uses that OS had to reinstall it today after trying out iTunes for Windows. The reason? After using iTunes, the PC reached its splash screen during a reboot, got halfway across the progress meter, and froze.

I haven't tried it myself but some PC users reported on Apple's discussion boards that the following fix works:

1. Shut down the PC.
2. Unplug the internal CD-RW drive.
3. Restart the PC.
4. Delete iTunes.
5. Shut down the PC.
6. Plug in the internal CD-RW drive.
7. Restart the PC again.

For the time being, though, it's probably just best to avoid installing iTunes at all if your OS is Win 2000 Pro.

Update: Apple has released iTunes for Windows version 4.1.1, which purportedly cures this problem. Download the new version here.
