Great New Devices from MacWorld Creative Pro Let Us Take Multimedia On the Go

Two welcome new devices let you tune in and record AM/FM radio transmissions and take digital video on the road.

Macworld magazine's picks for best of show from last week's MacWorld Creative Pro include two new devices that really stand out.

RadioSHARK

At first blush, Griffin Technology's $49.95 RadioSHARK seems unremarkable in function, if striking in appearance. The device's most obvious feature—adding a software-controlled AM/FM radio to any USB-equipped Macintosh—is nothing new; Apple itself offered radio and TV Tuner cards for years. But scratch the surface and RadioSHARK reveals itself to be a worthy beast indeed.

The genius of the product lies in RadioSHARK's ability to record AM, FM, and internet radio live or on a prerecorded schedule. This gives Macintosh users the ability to download radio broadcasts and play them back on an iPod or any other AIFF compatible digital music player at the gym or on the go.

I've really wanted a device like this for times during the workday when I couldn't tune in to my favorite shows or when I've arrived at my destination right in the middle of an engaging talk show. It seems like the folks at Griffin Technologies believe lots of us have the same problem. Do you agree?

Avias MEC Station

While Apple ponders its next move in the portable music space, a developer called Avias is forging ahead with a striking new Firewire-based multimedia device of its own. The oh-so-dully-named MEC Station transcends its nomenclature to provide a portable multimedia player for a plethora of formats, including DVD, DivX, Flash, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg4, Mp3, and WMA, as well as a digital photo album, presentation tool, and internet access. Slip a GPS module into the MEC Station and it doubles as a portable map too. All this in a 400 gram device with a 6.5" TFT LCD display. Wonders never cease.
