How To Send SMS text messages from iChat

How to send SMS messages using Apple's iChat software.

Paul Robichaux and Mike Wendsland pass along this terrific tip for sending text messages to cell phones and other portable devices using iChat:

From within the iChat application:

1. Type Shift-Command-N or select "New Chat With Person..." from the "File" menu.

2. Enter the telephone number of the SMS-enabled device you wish to reach in the form: +16505551212 where 650-555-1212 is replaced with the actual telephone number.

3. Type and send your message.

On a similar note, if your computer and cell phone are both Bluetooth-enabled, you can use Address Book to send and receive text messages.

1. Use the Bluetooth system preference to pair your computer to your phone.

2. Click any phone number label, such as "Cell phone", next to an SMS-enabled cell phone number on an address card.

3. Choose "Send SMS Message" from the pop-up menu.

4. Address Book must be open to receive return SMS messages.
