Sad news as Amanda Congdon has left Rocketboom. Even sadder is that her departure has deteriorated into a He Says/She Says debacle with her former partner Andrew Baron. He says she's leaving to pursue her dream of moving to LA for some Hollywood opportunities. She says the move to LA was based on the promise of moving Rocketboom production out there with her. Either way, I think Rocketboom fans are poorer for the whole situation.

What the hell happened to Alaska Airlines?

Man, I remember when they were the airline to pick if you wanted good food, friendly service, ontime schedules and new planes.
Suddenly, they're in the news every week or two for something bad.
Yesterday on the news I saw this story.
A woman travelling to a dog show in Florida is watching as they're loading her crated pooches into the cargo hold and one of the baggage handlers picks up a crate, tips it over his head and chucks it into the plane!

Later, when questioned about it, they claim it was a different dog/crate, like that's okay!

My favorite quote from the linked story:

She had been on her way to a dog competition in Florida. She's now taking only because she thinks he's too heavy to be thrown.

It's worth noting that the baggage handlers aren't Alaska Airlines employees, but they are employees of the company that Alaska hired to save them >$13 million/year, but after punching a hole in that jet and not reporting it and now this pooch toss, you gotta figure they're costing them something more than money.

Day 24 of Seattle Rain

Rain in Seattle isn't usually newsworthy, but I guess we're closing in on a record. (I don't think it's actually rained 24 days here in Lakebay, but I could be wrong since there were a couple of days where I didn't make outside until the afternoon.)

If the weather keeps up for another nine days, we'll break the record set in the winter of 1953.

There have been some mudslides in this part of the state and I guess there are a few rivers under flood watch, but for the most part, it hasn't been too disruptive. Most of the water on my property runs down into the beaver pond at the bottom of the hill I'm on and the pond doesn't seem to be getting any higher.
There always seems to be some sunshine mixed in pretty much every day, so it's not as bad as they make it sound on the news and in the paper. The worst thing is my car needs a wash and I haven't mown the lawn since forever. (Maybe this rain isn't so bad after all...)

Andy Caldecott dies in Dakar Rally

Man, less than a year after the Dakar Rally took the life of Fabrizio Meoni another rider falls during the race.
Forty-one year-old Aussie rider Andy Caldecott had actually retired from racing in September after failing to raise the funds to mount his third Dakar challenge. It was a last minute phone call from Repsol KTM a week before Christmas that made his dream come true.

The Dog Whisperer - Season 2 starts tonight

I'm not a big fan of 'reality' shows, but last season, I really loved watching The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel.

Each episode features two or three 'problem' dogs and their owners. After watching the dogs in action and an interview with the owners, Cesar Millan, a dog behaviorist, works with the dogs (and more importantly, the owners) to work out whatever problems the dogs are having.

It sounds pretty goofy at first, but after watching it a few times, you really start to see how Millan is able to get inside the dog's head. He establishes that he is the 'Alpha dog' and then makes the pooch do exactly what he wants.

In most cases, he has to 're-hab the dog and train the owner,' meaning it's usually something the owners are or aren't doing that is causing the problem. Once they are shown what to change, the 'problem' dog no longer has a problem.
