Andy Caldecott dies in Dakar Rally

Man, less than a year after the Dakar Rally took the life of Fabrizio Meoni another rider falls during the race.
Forty-one year-old Aussie rider Andy Caldecott had actually retired from racing in September after failing to raise the funds to mount his third Dakar challenge. It was a last minute phone call from Repsol KTM a week before Christmas that made his dream come true.

It was such a last minute scramble for him to compete, he even had to borrow a race suit from Nani Roma once he got to the Lisbon, Portugal start of the race.
He scored a win on the third stage of the event and was running 10th overall when he went down in what they're calling a low speed crash, not far from where Meoni died last year on the road to Kiffa in Mauritania. After Meoni's death, they've instituted a speed limit on the motorcycles. Caldecott was reportedly well under that limit when he crashed.
Repsol KTM rider Marc Coma is currently leading the motorcycles, it's not known if he'll be continuing.

Update from KTM: "The Repsol KTM Team announces that, out of consideration for the effort, dedication and the great work done by KTM rider Andy Caldecott, the team has decided that it will continue with its participation in the 2006 Lisbon Dakar Rally."

Drag Boat Training Canopy

When I got to the sports medicine clinic, this bad boy was parked out front:

Its a trainer for the rescue divers that pull maniacs pilots out of the APBA boats when they flip/disintegrate (as the often seem to, on TV anyway.)
These capsules are supposed to stay intact and keep the pilots safe when catastrophe strikes, but they still need to be retrieved pretty quickly.

Bernie Ecclestone sells controlling interest in Formula 1

It appears that Bernie Ecclestone has sold his interest in F1 to CVC Capital Partners.
CVC already owns Dorna (who bring us MotoGP).

They reportedly paid $1 billion for 75% of F1. CVC is setting up a new group called Alpha Prema to run F1 (and Ecclestone received some stake in that company, showing they'll probably be relying on his expertise to run things, at least initially.

They will have their work cut out for them, as some of the manufacturers are talking about starting their own series if they don't get some better terms from F1.

2006 Dakar Rally starting in Lisbon

For the first time, the world famous Paris Dakar Rally is starting in Lisbon, Portugal. It'll start on New Year's Eve, as usual and run until Jan 15th.

In another first for the rally, there will be a speed limit for motorcycles and trucks (150kph), partly for safety, especially after Meoni and amatuer rider Jose Manuel Perez's fatal crashes last year, and partly to level the field and return the focus to navigation. There will also be some changes to GPS usage rules that are meant to make the competitors rely more on their own navigation skills and road book reading abilities.

Hopefully the US television coverage will be a little better/more extensive than last year's crap-tastic little snippets we were fed. I ended up downloading coverage of the stages from some kind soul in Australian that had his feed, up on bittorrent within an hour or two of showing.

Ice racing

The 30th anniversary season of the Annual World Championship ICE Racing Series kicks off next month.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary, they're debuting a new pro division, the Manufacturers World Cup, featuring these high-horsepower four-stroke singles: Honda CRF450R, Kawasaki KX450F, KTM 450SX, Suziki RM-Z450, and the Yamaha YZ450F.

In addition to the bikes, in other divisions they also race unlimited outlaw Quad/ATVs and Speedway Karts (X-Karts), all on flat oval ice tracks.

After the opening races in Portland on December 16th, they'll travel to the Oakland Arena (are you paying attention StickyC and Jimbo?) on December 17th, then the Everett Events Center in Washington (where I'll hopefully catch them) on December 18th.

Each event has about 20 races and lasts about 2-1/2 hours, now that winter is here and MotoGP and AMA and World Superbikes are done, it's the perfect way to get that two wheel race fix.

For the rest of the dates and more info, check out their site:

That'll ruin your day

Not only did this motorcyclist crash. She flipped over the guardrail and fell about three stories into Lake Washington:

Motorcycle Crash Sends Woman Into Lake Washington

After hitting the water, she was able to swim about 25 yards to a nearby beach. Rescuers reached her after hacking through some brush to get to her. She broke some bones, but she's gotta be thanking her lucky stars she was able to swim in her motorcycle gear. Surviving the crash only to drown would suck!

No More Pikes Peak Raceway

Looks like Pike's Peak International Raceway is gone after this year:

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2005/Sep/050930f.htm

It's rotten enough that it's happening, but it looks like it's just a move by the ISC (the folks who run Daytona) to cut down on the competition:

ISC expects to close the facility and begin to market the approximate 1,200-acre parcel for sale, with the requirement that the property not be used for motorsports-related events.

Missing Santa Rosa Motorcyclist Found Dead

In a sad turn, Melinda "Big Red" Moore's body was found at the bottom of an 800 foot cliff off Highway 1 near Fort Ross.

http://cbs5.com/topstories/local_story_272094103.html

It's still under investigation, but it appears to be a suicide. She apparently took of her gloves and helmet and placed them as a marker on the side of the road before riding her bike off the cliff.

Missing NorCal Rider

Santa Rosa, CA rider Melinda Moore went missing Monday morning (19SEP2005) after riding away on her Aprilia Tuono.
She didn't show up for her classes on Monday and there hasn't been any activity on her ATM or credit cards.

Several groups are putting together rides to search the back roads she's known to ride.

Pain in the...

ass wallet.

Just cost me $14 to fill up my motorcycle (of course I was off the beaten path in the Olympic rainforest, but still, that's ridiculous.)

2006 Laguna Seca MotoGP Tix On Sale Today

Looks like it's $90 for general admission all three days and $40 for a paddock pass.

Not sure if I'll go next year, since I've moved away, but I'll probably get some tickets anyway, just in case. Shouldn't be too hard to unload them later if plans change.
