Cadillac Ranch - Amarillo, TX

No Route 66 road trip would be complete without a stop at the Cadillac Ranch. I've been fascinated with this tourist trap since I was a kid. Even then, I thought it was so cool that someone would bury a bunch of cars nose first in the middle of a field somewhere.

For those not familiar with the Cadillac Ranch, it's basically 10 Cadillacs, ranging from a 1949 Cadillac Club Coupe to a 1963 Cadillac Sedan, buried nose first in the middle of a cow field just west of Amarillo, TX.

The cars are all spray painted with graffiti, but that's not vandalism, it's encouraged by the owners. The bovine inhabitants of the ranch don't seem to mind all the visitors. These guys were checking me out while I was checking the cars out:

While in Amarillo, I had to stop by the Big Texan Steak Ranch, home of the free 72 ounce steak. The deal with the freebie steak is that you have to eat the whole steak dinner (including roll, potato, salad, etc.) in an hour. There's a special seat (solo, of course) that you sit at, (while everyone else in the joint watches you). There's a timer behind you, counting down the time. If you don't finish before the hour is up, you pay $50.

Not feeling up to the challenge, I opted for the rattlesnake appetizer and one of their huge mugs of beer. (I can tell you that rattlesnake DOES actually taste like chicken.)
