We have found a way to keep them watered while we
are away by setting the tray they are sitting in, into another tray with water
(so they get watered from the bottom) This method works pretty
well.
...I am not sure if the seeds
were old or if the conditions were not appropriate for them (too hot, too wet,
etc.) The snaps are doing well and we will be transplanting them into 2 inch
blocks soon.
The transplanted tomatoes and peppers are all
doing great. The tomatoes are starting to get their true leaves and we had to
take the plastic cover off their tray because they were getting so tall. The 2
inch soil blocks hold the moisture so much longer than the small blocks that we
have not had to water too much the last few days. We have found a way to keep
them watered while we are away by setting the tray they are sitting in, into
another tray with water (so they get watered from the bottom) This method works
pretty well. Our next step will be to move the tomatoes into an even bigger
block, but we are still looking into what to use for a 4 inch container. Four
inch soil block makers are available, but they are expensive and it is difficult
to find a vendors that sell them. Peat pots are another
option.
A few more pansies came up but
not as many as we had hoped for. I am not sure if we will try again or if we
will just support the farmers market and buy their pansies this year. I am not
sure if the seeds were old or if the conditions were not appropriate for them
(too hot, too wet, etc.) The snaps are doing well and we will be transplanting
them into 2 inch blocks soon. The heat mat is now turned off since everything
has germinated which will slow the growing process down a bit. This is all
right as we are on schedule for transplanting into the garden.
