Peas, Spinach, and Lettuce
To keep the critters out, we nailed stainless
steel quarter inch mesh to a miniature white picket fence and stuffed it around
the inside edge of the beds.

Last
year we built some raised beds in our back yard. We used untreated two by six
boards, which we nailed together at the corners to form a four by eight foot
bed. We dug the beds into the ground about one inch, flipped the sod over
inside the box, and added 100% composted yard waste as the soil. To keep the
critters out, we nailed stainless steel quarter inch mesh to a miniature white
picket fence and stuffed it around the inside edge of the
beds.
Tonight we seeded one eight foot
row each of snap peas, spinach, and lettuce mix. The rows are one foot apart
with about a half a foot between the side of the beds and the rows. Last year
we planted these things in the other bed, so we are trying to rotate our crops
this year. We plan on cutting the lettuce for salad mix before they grow into
heads. We will also trellis the peas with twin and two long metal rods as soon
as they sprout.
We can't
wait!
