How are things doing?
As of July 1st, the gardens are looking great, we
will begin harvesting some of our crops this week. it's so fun to watch
everything grow this time of year and we begin picking the 'first' of all our
veggies. it's so rewarding to grow our own food.
As of July 1st our gardens are looking great.
The peas are looking green and lush and I actually had my first pod tonight even
though Chris got mad because it was so small, I couldn't contain myself! The
lettuce mix we planted is great, we will be doing our 1st cutting tomorrow for
some salad over the weekend. The spinach didn't germinate too well and most of
what did bolted already so we missed that window. Next year we will plant that
much earlier as it doesn't like it hot. The radishes will be harvested tomorrow
as well, most of them, we got excellent germination on the bed with beets,
radishes and carrots. We will cut some beet greens tomorrow for a braising mix
but plan to leave the beets in a little longer to get bigger. Carrots have
lovely green tops and are looking really healthy. We have had a cool summer so
far but the heat just began the past 2 weeks and it's amazing to see things take
off like they do. The beginning of the summer was wet and cool.
Our tomatoes in the pots against the
house are doing well, the cherry yellow golds have baby tomatoes on them
already. We really have to watch the potted tomatoes for water, they tend to dry
out quickly. The tomatoes in the garden are coming around too. At first I
think they had a little transplant shock and water logged so they were sort of
stunted, but now all the new growth they are putting on looks great. I think we
will have an abundance of tomatoes this year. The peppers we recently
uncovered, hoping the bunny no longer wants to snack on them. They are doing
fairly well and now that the white remay is off them i think they will take off
nicely. The flowers i planted in Gordy's garden have buds on them
(snapdragons) so that is exciting, we will be making snap bouquets in no time!
So all in all the gardens are growing like crazy (as well as weeds). We have
gotten out and weeded amongst the plants a few times now and it just looks so
nice when the rows are clean! It's the fun time of year now to watch everything
grow so quickly and begin harvesting the 'first' of everything- I don't know
why everyone doesn't grow some of their own food- it's so rewarding!
