Varments and Peppers

Less than one week after we planted the pepper
plants into the garden, the rabbits feasted on about 4 of them. 2 of the plants
they munched down to the stalk, one completely down to the ground and a few they
ate the top green leaves down. They snacked on a few of the snapdragons that
were over there as well, but not to the severity of the pepper plants. Tonight
we decided to try some things to protect the other peppers from the mouths of
the little rabbits that frolic in the garden. First I sprinkled dried blood
fertilizer all around the peppers, I read online that may deter the little
varments. Then Chris weeded around all of them and mixed in the dried blood.
Then we placed some remay seed fabric over the entire line of peppers like a
little house to keep the rabbits from even getting close to the plants. The
fabric is very thin so light and water can penetrate in to the plants. We made
a tent like shape over the peppers, the fabric went over the top of the stakes.
We buried the ends into the dirt so they will have to work rather hard to burrow
under if they need to. Then I sprinkled EVEN more dried blood along the outside
of where we buried the fabric, if the rabbit gets in there now it deserves to
feast on the peppers because it will have had to go through a lot of work to get
at them! Once the peppers get big enough that they can stand on their own and
take a little more chewing, we will remove the fabric. We will update on the
rabbit situation as needed, we think we may have won this battle!
