Plug-ins for extensions you add to a file or folder

Here you'll find descriptions of the extensions you can add to files and folders when you use certain plug-ins. There are "real" file extensions, which are actually used by files to denote the file type, and "made up" extensions, which are invented by the plug-in writer to allow you to specify certain actions for files and folders, e.g. .mailme.

gnutar Encodes files and folders as a gnutar archive, common on Unix and NeXTstep. (The gnu alternative to a tar archive.) Gnutar Included with Apple Developer Tools.

lha LHa files, an ancient compression format on IBM PCs. Common on the Commodore Amiga and the Unix community, especially in Japan. OpenUp OpenUp

pax The posix replacement of tar and cpio, commonly used by Apple for software distribution. OS X Unix Encodings None (Mac OS X built-in)
sit Compresses items as StuffIt archives. The most popular compression format on the Macintosh. Dropstuff DropStuff

uu Indicates uuencoding (7-bit ASCII encoding of 8-bit data), common on Usenet. OpenUp OpenUp

Z The original Unix compression format. Fallen somewhat into disfavour, because of patent conflicts. OS X Unix Encodings None (Mac OS X built-in)

Made up addable extensions

You can do more with AEP than encoding data, when you add a made up extension, you can run any kind of application.
