Eminounu tram and hop aboard. Ride east bound to Sultanahmet, 16th stop.

Get off tram at Sultanahmet, walk to hotel Empress Zoë

Dinner at Denizhan, Turgat Reis Yolu 1.5 mile outside of town. Across from Tofas/Fiat station,

Reservations suggested. Beef baked with cheese, pistachio nuts, and garlic spinkled with sesame seeds.

DAY 6 Sept. 26 Sunday

A visit to Mausolus Mausoleum, another wonder of the ancient world.

One day cruise on the Aegean Sea.

DAY 7 Sept. 27 Monday

Per Let’s Go Turkey, buses to the Bodrum airport depart from the otogar ($5). The otogar is on Çevat S(h)akir Cad.

Fly back to Istanbul

Take Metro to Ulubatli (Topkapi Ulubatli?) Find Sulukule Cad. along city

wall and walk north about a mile, along the way is Neslisa Mosque, then

Pasha Cad., and after that look for Neshter Sk (should be almost first street)

Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, then you must cross over large street of Fevzi

and follow to Kariye Hotel. Have lunch at Asitane, then see Kariye Muzesi,

formerly Kariye Camii or St. Savior in Chora-9:30am to 6:30pm Thur-Tues.

The best Byzantine mosaics are at Chora! And some nice frescoes too.

Cappadocia

Tour of the north Cappadocia area with Adnan

Christian communities moved into the Cappadocia region in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD to escape Roman persecution

as the natural rock structures offered refuge and soon monastic colonies expanded. Clandestine religion thrived in

the caves and underground cities which were started in Hittite times.

Tour of the south Cappadocia area with Selim.

Millstone doors were used to block tunnels while the inhabitants escaped.

The round doors were wedged shut and could only be opened from one side.

Ihlara Valley cave church hike.

There is a Caravansrai about every 30 kilometers on the silk road.

DAY 11 Oct. 1 Friday

The Blue Mosque, which takes its name from the mainly blue Iznik tilework decorating its interior,

is one of the most famous religious buildings in the world-Sultan Ahmet Camii to the Turks,

taken from nearby hotel rooftop and once more the Ayasofya.

Don't park illegally in Istanbul.

Constantine's Column, disappointingly under reconstruction, but too important to miss. Erected in 330 AD,

it celebrates Constantinople's status as the capital of Byzantium, some historians believe there would be

no Christianity had Constantine not converted.

Tea is what Turks drink most often.

Mehter concert, this startlingly powerful musical performance re-creates the traditional military band of the Janissaries.

Our last day in Turkey, packing up and leaving the hotel Empress Zoë.

There's a Sultan buried in this Camii (Mosque) graveyard.

A stroll through the Grand Bazaar.

Some streets in Istanbul can get very crowded.

Fish sandwiches under the Galata Bridge and by the junction of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.

One last Turkish coffee before heading out to the airport.
