Well, this very well may be my last log entry in 2007. This has been a very busy and fun-filled year for me art wise. Topping the list has been the excitement generated by DAUGHTER OF DRACULA (order by clicking on the italicized words at left or the link the the left-hand column). I always knew this was a great project from day one, but to see the reviews and comments from those who’ve seen the book have been a lot more effusive than I had anticipated. As I mentioned in a holiday telephone conversation with collaborator and pal Ron Fortier I lived with DOD for two years on the drawing board and the book became pretty “mundane” to me. By that I mean it had become so familiar that my view of it was subdued and reserved—nothing to get excited about. I hope this excitement others have for the book eventually translates into wider readership and sales as the word gets out. Fingers crossed! a snowy embrace from DAUGHTER OF DRACULA Here are a few of links to some reviews, interviews and such associated with DOD. Click on the italicized words below for the link: The last couple of weeks have not been as productive as I would have liked, but with the abundance of events for the holiday I really shouldn’t have been surprised. I always say I hope for more, but things end up as they end up- hopes aside. I’ll post here what I’ve gotten done until now with hopes of more to show after we get through the holidays and the traveling/visiting.
Chapter 10 Captain Hazzard and the CAVEMEN OF NEW YORKCAVEMEN OF NEW YORK is coming along, and I hope to have it finished up the first week or so of January, 2008. After that should be smooth sailing for ROBYN OF SHERWOOD pages to start coming off the drawing board again. I know I keep promising those, but this last project’s completion should make way for that.
Chapter 7 Captain Hazzard and the CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK As usual, Ron has another idea he’s pitched at me for a short EC Comics type story for a publication that has solicited for it. I’ll be thinking about fitting that in between pages of ROS as we go along. I’ll know whether I can fully commit to it as CAVEMEN completes and I see how things go with getting out ROS pages. Obviously I’ll let you know as soon as I do.
page 3 of Robyn of Sherwood (probably my favorite page so far!) Just before sitting down to compose this I sent off my annual “E-Holiday Card” for some close, special friends online. Last years’ card was based on a pulp character, Domino Lady, which I reproduce here for your viewing pleasure. “Oh what fun it is to push a drawing pencil tonight…”
Domino Lady in my '06 Christmas Card Well, that’s going to have to be it for the now, folks. I expect I’ll be back here with more in a couple of weeks after the holidays settle down with more for you to look at. There will hopefully be a couple of new books to “hawk” to you all as the Wildcat paperbacks stop printing and Ron Fortier and I ramp up our output for Cornerstone Books. Also I hope to have updates on ROBYN OF SHERWOOD and final progress on CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK. Until then I wish you all the Merriest of Christmases and a Happy, Bountiful New Year. More as it develops… Sunday, December 9, 2007 3:07 PMOkay, lots to show you this week, so we need to hit the ground running… "detail" from page 93 of DAUGHTER OF DRACULA Ron Fortier just reported to me earlier today that he’s sold the last of his personal copies of DAUGHTER OF DRACULA to his local comics shop, who will in turn sell them for $15/each. Folks, you can get YOUR copy for the measley price of $13 signed by Ron and me, sealed in a bag and delivered (I have 7 copies left as I write this- use the e-mail link below)—or you can order your copy directly from Indyplanet.com for $10 + postage. Surf over and check it out or check out my Gallery pages on my website for a look at the book.
chapter one: Captain Hazzard-CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK Sales pitch out of the way we’ll move quickly on to what’s been flying off the drawing board this week. Well, it comes in threes: Two illo’s for CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK, the new CAPTAIN HAZZARD novel Ron has written and I am illustrating and designing; Three more pages of ROBYN OF SHERWOOD gray-toned and ready for your approving looks. There should be jpegs of those images sprinkled hereabouts.
chapter four: Captain Hazzard-CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK Here in Mid-Missouri we’ve had a nice little ice-storm that has coated everything in about 3/4” of ice. My pickup looks like a silver popsicle right now. The driveway is most likely a slippery mess (I’ve been too chicken to check) and should make leaving the house to get to work tomorrow morning a real chore. I’ll probably venture out later the check the drive and melt the popsicle.
ROBYN OF SHERWOOD page 8 Interestingly enough as I was headed to bed around midnight last night during the freezing rain it actually thundered! I know that’s always possible during even snow storms, but it’s always a weird feeling when you hear during a cold, icy rain what you’d normally hear during a nice steady, warm sprinkle in Spring or Summer.
Nothing new to report on the “mystery western”. It’s in the hands of the inker right now and he will hopefully report back to me soon on his progress. This will be a big project for him (as Ron and I hope it will be all around), so he’s a bit nervous – understandably. I can’t wait to see what he does.
Okay, I’m going to wrap this up now, as I’m hoping to get to the latest illo’ (#3) of CAPTAIN HAZZARD and get it inked up. And then maybe get started on a new page of ROBYN OF SHERWOOD. There should be more to look at next time! More as it develops… Saturday, December 1, 2007 6:38 PMYAHOO! At long last DAUGHTER OF DRACULA is available for order at IndyPlanet.com. Just click on that gorgeous cover digitally painted by Mark Maddox in the left column and you’ll be taken directly to the web page where you can order DOD!
photo of me holding the preview copy of DAUGHTER OF DRACULA So why did it take so long? Well, truth be told, I did not completely understand what I needed to do to get our book on the Indy Planet website. I thought all I need do was fill out the order form and indicate that I wanted our book sold on Indy Planet. What I didn’t catch (until just this morning!) is that in order for it to be listed there need to be special sized images uploaded to the site previewing the cover and six pages. Those images have been created, uploaded and you all can now order your copies and have them delivered right to your doorstep! And after it arrives please e-mail Ron Fortier or me (or both) and let us know what you thought of it.
inks, grey tones ROBYN OF SHERWOOD page 6 Also this week has been the first in many months that I have done some work to advance ROBYN OF SHERWOOD toward its goal of publication some time next year. Below should be two pages of grey tones of inked pages from the first issue. I hope to have more toned in the next few days as well as the beginnings of the first few pages of part two (originally Issue #2 of the mini-series) penciled on the drawing board.
inks, grey tones ROBYN OF SHERWOOD page 7 In addition, as mentioned in my last post (see archives for November), Ron Fortier sent me the script for the next Captain Hazzard novel, THE CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK. I hope to have at least one, maybe two, illustrations drawn for this. I’ll show whatever I get completed in my next post. I had hoped to be further along, but things have been hectic at work where I sometimes steal a moment or two between pick ups on route to read at least parts of chapters. In addition what spare time I do have is eaten up by a few design projects they’ve asked me to undertake. Ha! They need to find more time for me to get to those…
Captain Hazzard I’m still waiting to hear back from my “mystery convention” that may happen in March. I’m also hoping to be invited as a guest to Planet ComiCon this year. Last year it conflicted with the Pulp Convention in Chicago, so I wasn’t able to attend. It is my favorite show right now—just the right size, and I have a small cadre of old fans who remember me from my work in the ‘90’s. I’m also going to try to get the family to go to Chicago for a few days prior to Wizard World so I can promote DOD and whatever else comes out between now and then. I’ll keep you all posted on how that progresses. Well, it’s time to do a bit of work tying up lose ends for the day and then relaxing into tomorrow. Talk to you again soon. More as it develops. |
