| Moving from Roadblocks to Breathroughs... | | Date Created: Aug 10, 2004, 05:32 PM |
The other day I was driving home and heard on the radio that my usual route was blocked. So, my brain started trying to figure out how else to "get there from here". There was one other option, but it actually took me out of the way a bit. Oh well, better to be moving obstruction-free for a while longer than be trapped on a freeway at a dead stop with thousands of other motorists.
To my surprise, the alternative route shaved a full 10 minutes off my drive home. It was counter-intuitive. But, it went out through a rural area that was stop-light free and that more than made up for the circuitous route.
In almost every business there is a faster, better, more cost effective, higher ROI way of "getting there". But, because we are never presented with a road-block, we are never forced to consider these breakthrough routes.
One solution...
One solution I've found for clients is to create artificial blocks. What if you lost your entire direct sales force, how could you still accomplish the same results? What if your three top team members all moved to different States - could you still conduct business? What if your ability to produce your product was permanently crippled - how quickly could you work around the solution using outsourcing?
You get the idea. You can create your own artificial road blocks simply by looking at your most cherished assets and capabilities and pondering how you would survive if they were jeopardized.
This little "thought experiment" can produce some surprising breakthroughs. Try it. |
