Too often, what we know to be true - isn't.
For example: Not long ago I was in a meeting where the company's IT department was arguing that they shouldn't include a blog in the company website because blogs were "only for individuals."
Once they had seen a tool in use for a specific purpose - they experienced "category lock." Their imaginations just couldn't see the many different twists and possibilities for such a powerful communications medium.
But before we are too hard on them we need to realize that somewhere in our business and life, we too have "category lock."
Everyone in the car rental industry knew that the big bucks were at the airports. That's where people rented cars. Everyone except Enterprise that is. They realized that maybe, just maybe people who had been in accidents, who had relatives in town, who had car repairs, etc. might want a rental car. That breaking of the industry's "category lock" has made Enterprise the fastest growing car rental company.
Both you and I know things to be true that aren't. Let's hope we are open-minded (and humble) enough to discover our errors before our competitors do.
