Boston 24-Hour Sci-Fi Film Marathon --- February, 2003

The Boston 24-Hour Sci-fi Film Marathon has been going on for a long time... this was my 26th. A great reason to meet up with old friends, drink fine wine and beer, and watch movies on the big screen.

Simply called SF28, the Sci-fi Film Marathon, is held at the local Arts Theater.
From Jersey, Dallas, Portland and Rochester, we all arrived in Boston. Here's Tom looking a bit like Conan O'Brien at our rendezvous spot (The Cheer's Bar at Logan).
Glenn had arranged a Saturday afternoon tasting and tour at the Harpoon Brewery... a natural expedition for this crowd.
Barb proposes the first of many 'toasts' ... as the Harpoon provides a good selection of beers and explanation of their products and history.
Glenn Engman (my old RIT classmate) always does a SUPER job hosting us for this yearly event, and always invites us back to following year to do it all over again!
Harpoon was one of the first (if not the first) micro-brews in Boston... pre-dating Sam Adams, I beleive.
Glenn reminisces about our days back at RIT... and recalls the local Rochester brew left something to be desired.
I'm showing Bruce my recent BV Wine Ambassador Pages... (courtesy the Harpoon Website computer ... oops!)
Out on the balcony overlooking the brew vessels, we quickly culminate in our first group photo of the trip.
And... always looking to add a bit of levity, I ask the group to wave and toast the brewmaster.
Paula Engman always puts on a great Saturday evening spread... Mexican was this years's theme. Yummy.
And along with the Mexican Dinner, Glenn prepared a pitcher of Margarettas to help wash them down.
Inside the Coolidge Corner Theater, the audience prepares for the mission briefing and countdown. First movie shown was the recent thriller, "Minority Report."
After "Metropolis", "Invaders from Mars" and "The Invisible Boy" we usually duck out for a quick bite during the first "dog" movie.
Being thoroughly modern in terms of marketing, Commander Tom of the 'Martian Liberation Organization' oversees poster, coffee cups and raygun sales.
Periodically throughout the marathon, we shoot a few views of the participants with a time scale of how far we're into the 24 hours. (Here it reads 1 hour to start... as we were kindly let in early due to severe cold weather)
In the Coolidge lobby, Mary and I check out the food items and coffee supply. $10 will buy you a bottomless cup for the duration of the Marathon... a popular item.
Joe Tupay has been a solid supporter and knowledgeable source of Sci-Fi Marathon enthusiasm for many years. I keep asking that his brother Paul to come, but no luck so far.
Looks to be about 5 hours into the Marathon, Paula and Glenn still look fit and ready for another 19 hours yet to come.
The team is looking a bit mesmerized, no doubt, from watching the "Valley of the Gwangi" and the "Brain from Planet Arous".
Still looking perky about half way through the Marathon, Barb is about to grab some shuteye, while I'm looking forward to "Screemers" and "Planet of the Vampires".
Always handy with his "Light Blaster," Wes shows pinpoint accuracy at the offending Photographer... me.
Mary gives Joe a hug as we said our good-byes. Shockingly, we'll all be ready for SF29 much too soon.
As we exited the theater on noon Monday, the weather was snowing... over 2 feet fell, delaying some of the return journeys.

Ah!...but next year!
