Extra Credit Reviews
The plays to be found by the method described below are those that a consensus of critics have agreed are of special merit. There are two places to go to find plays to see for this class, both in the L.A. Times. Once you have found some plays to see in the newspaper, try the online resource to learn more about them and to help you decide which one you most want to see.
Print 1: Go to the Calendar Part II section of the Sunday Los Angeles Times. Then look for "THE GUIDE" page, and the "Theater" heading. Under Theater you will find the sub-heading called "Continuing." You may see any play under this heading that has a star in front of its title, except for the exceptions listed below.
Print 2: Go to the Calendar WEEKEND pull-out magazine section of the Thursday Los Angeles Times. Look for the "8 DAYS" pages, and then the "Theater" section. Under Theater you will find the sub-heading called "Critics' Choices." You may see any play under this heading. See exceptions below.
Note: There are more Critics' Choices" in the Thursday Calendar than in the Sunday one.
Online: You may use this online resource as your first stop to find a play to see but it lacks details and theatre contact information found in the print methods described above. To get that info online go to www.calendarlive.com/stage. Once there look for "Critics' Choices" in the left margin and click on the link. Clicking on the title of a show you will be taken to a page that contains the original L.A. Times review, ticket information, and address and phone number. At the top of each review you may find that the name of the theater itself is a link to further info about the theatre which may assist you in writing your review. Maps are also provided.
If the play you are interested is being produced at one of the theatres listed below, you can go directly to their website and get all the information you may need without registering for the L.A. Times website.
Exceptions you can't see: There are some shows that even though they appear in these lists are not approved for this assignment. If any show falls into this category at this time it will be listed below. If you want to know why, see the FAQ page.

This assignment may be done as a replacement for Review #2.Go to the "Calendar Weekend Magazine" section of the Thursday Los Angeles Times and look for a small column entitled Kid Stuff. It is toward the back and may be under "8 Days: Events." You have to look carefully. Or, you can try going to the latimes.com and clicking on CalenderLive section and do a seach for Children, but this is unreliable. Either way, make sure it's theatre, not a storybook reading or something like that. Should involve acting, not just reading from a book, nor a concert. Musicals are okay. If you're not sure, e-mail me the description and ask. See the Questions page for what you are to write about.
