Objectives

This course is intended to give a broad overview of the dramatic arts on both stage and screen. It will include the roles of audience, critic, performer, director, designer and writer; dramatic structure and genre; and the production process. It is intended that after completing this course you will be a more astute and discerning consumer of plays, films, and television programs. You will also have a better understanding of the largest employer in southern California: the entertainment industry. Those who intend to pursue a career in this industry will find this course a useful first step.

Textbook

The Theatre Experience, 11th edition, by Edwin Wilson
This book is available at the Cerritos College Bookstore,
or at Amazon.com by clicking the title or image.

Quizzes

There are multiple choice quizzes for each of the eighteen chapters of the textbook. You will take the quizzes online. You may retake a quiz after it is graded, but I will only record the first result. Quiz information is at the end of each lecture starting with Lecture #4.

Lectures

Copyrighted lectures are online at this website for study purposes by students enrolled in my class only. They may not be reproduced, redistributed, or used in any other way without permission. Lectures may be accessed from the Calendar page.

Policies

Late Assignments: Any assignment or project submitted late will have point value reduced by 50% before grading. If you know you are going to be unavailable on the day an assignment is due, turn it in early. In some rare cases it may be possible to take a test early on campus if you talk to me in advance. There will be no make up tests. Extra credit may be used to compensate for missing test points.

Drops: Students will be dropped by the instructor from this class for unsatisfactory progress. In other words if you are tracking a grade of "F" by mid term you will be dropped.

Play & Film Attendance: You must attend and report on two plays and one film during the course of the semester. One of the plays will be a professional off-campus production and will cost about $10 to $20--plan accordingly. See Play and Film Lists.

Plagiarism: This is the copying the words of another and submitting them as your own in an assignment--it is literary theft. Copying and pasting from the Internet makes such cheating very easy; it also makes catching cheaters easier. Students caught plagiarizing face failing the assignment, failing the course, or suspension. Don't put yourself in this position. See the FAQ page for details on how to avoid plagiarism when using source material.

Assignments

I give many small assignments rather than a few big ones. No single assignment is worth more than seven points. You may get specific information about each assignment by clicking the Assignments link at the top or bottom of this page.

Grading Procedures

Once I've graded an assignment I will send you a copy back by e-mail. The first word of the subject line will be OKAY, REDO, LATE, or NO CREDIT. At the beginning of the actual message will be comments, if any, on the assignment.

Each lecture exercise will be worth one-half point for OKAY completion. If your answer is inadequate I will return it to you for a REDO. You can earn one-quarter point for redoing the exercise and returning it corrected. Keep up with lectures. Lecture answers received LATE after the due date may be awarded one-quarter point if the answer is adequate. If an answer is hopelessly wrong, or if it returned after a redo and is still wrong, it will be marked NO CREDIT and get zero points.

Gradebook

For privacy and security reasons I don't post my gradebook live. But you may download a personal version of it for use in recording and keeping track of your own points. If you have Excel, click here to download a spreadsheet on which you may keep a running total of your accumulated points.

Extra Credit

Extra credit may be earned to make up for missing assignments or a low grade. You may earn extra credit by completing any or all of the following options. No more than 6 points total may be earned through extra credit. Click on the links for details.
