Prostate Cancer Awareness
Dealing with an "Orphan" Disease
Prostate Cancer
Situation in the US
1. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among
men. Approximately 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate
cancer every year - one man every 2.63 minutes.
2. And almost 30,000 die each year from the disease - one
man every 17.52 minutes.
3. The good news is that research shows that prostate
cancer is very treatable if discovered early, before it has
metastasized.
4. There are simple blood tests that allow for the early
detection of prostate cancer.
5. The bad news is that most men do not know about these
tests, what the numbers mean, nor do they track these
values over time, which is critical for early detection and
prevention.
Prostate
Cancer Awareness Project
Mission
1. Ensure that every man over 35 measures and tracks their
their PSA and Free PSA values annually, because we believe
these two tests currently comprise the most effective early
detection system when done in conjunction with an annual
physical examination and discussion with their physician.
2. Create a nationwide series of Black Tire Affair®
bicycling events that will raise prostate cancer awareness
and provide a vehicle for ongoing exercise and nutrition
improvement programs.
Why?
1. Most men do not know their PSA and Free PSA numbers.
2. Those that do, rarely know what they mean.
3. This data needs to be tracked over time for effective
awareness and early treatment.
4. The rate of PSA change in PSA value and the ratio of
Free PSA to PSA are critical to prostate cancer prediction.
4. The traditional “test beginning at 50” and “anything
under 4.0 is fine” guidelines aren’t really effective.
5. The American Cancer Society’s research shows that a
third of all cancers are diet and exercise related.
6. We believe that early detection can have a significant
impact in reducing prostate cancer deaths.
