Prostate
Cancer Awareness Rider Club
Beginning with 2007, the PCaAP
has created a rider club program to raise awareness about
prostate cancer prevention and to improve fitness and
recurrence prevention through cycling.
Three initial rides are in place. Look for a rider wearing
the white Prostate Cancer Awareness Project jersey.
Ride #1 Location: The Strand. Ride
description: A 20 mile, easy paced ride along the
beach. Start point: The pier in Manhattan
Beach. Time: 8 a.m. Saturday mornings.
Ride #2 Location: ADT Center velodrome.
Ride description: A 30 - 90 minute workout
in the indoor velodrome. Start point: The
ADT velodrome at the Home Depot Center in Carson,
California. Time: 6 p.m. Wednesday
evenings, unless the velodrome is closed for an event.
Note: An easy track qualification program
is required. Contact Robert.Hess@ProstateCancerAwarenessProject.org
for additional information, or sign up through www.LAVelodrome.org.
Member Developed Rides
Club participants are encouraged to create additional
events and submit them for posting to the website. We would
like to add mountain bike, cyclocross and easy cruiser
routes to the program.
Annual Mileage, Vertical Climb and Long Distance
Programs
Consistent exercise is a fundamental building block of
fitness and cancer prevention. The PCaAP's
annual mileage program was created both as an incentive to
keep riding and as a means of measuring fitness
improvement.
The program is simple and self-managed. Just ride your bike
and keep track of your mileage. Submit your data to us and
we will post it to the member mileage chart that will be
coming soon. [In the near future we hope to implement a
feature that allows members to update their information
directly to the website].
Mileage Award Program
Annual mileage categories are as follows:
250, 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500, 3,000, 3,500, 4000,
4500, and 5,000 miles. If members go beyond this - and I'm
sure many of you will, we will create new categories.
King of the Mountains
For those of you who are climbers, we have the annual
vertical climb categories: 2,500, 5,000, 10,000, 25000,
50,000, 75,000, 100,000, 125,000, 150,000, 175,000,
200,000, 225,000, and 250,000 vertical feet. The member
with the most vertical vertical feet of climb will be
crowned the PCPP King of the Mountains.
Long Distance (Brevet)
If you enjoy riding centuries or ultra-distance events,
this category is for you. Just track your longest
continuous 24 hour distance, and vie for the "One Day King"
designation.
