Outreach Programs


Raison D'Etre's tight harmonies weave a musical tapestry of times gone by in these programs designed for community events, libraries, and schools:

"Song Styles of the Swing Era"

Dressed as The Swing Canaries, a fictional trio that sings like the Andrews Sisters but plays its own accompaniment, Raison D'Etre performs an hour-long program of signature songs from the Swing Era. Perfect for military reunions, retirement homes, or Veteran' s Day celebrations, this program includes discussions of song structure and sing-alongs.

"Harmonies Through the Ages"

This hour-long program is a journey through American song including 18th Century folk ballads, Native American chant, Shaker hymns, spirituals, Depression Era anthems, Swing tunes, 50s ditties, and 60s singer-songwriters. The program explores how song forms reflect the evolving American voice.

"Songs of the North and South"

This 30-45 minute program features songs embraced by both sides in the Civil War. Love ballads, marching tunes, campaign songs, and minstrel melodies reflect the soul of a nation divided. Debuted at the Cincinnati Museum Center's "Liberty on the Border" exhibit, this program can performed in costume for social studies classes , library programming, or historic sites and festivals.

"Christmas Belles"

Raison D'Etre performs traditional carols and secular surprises in costume(circa 1790-1830) for historic sites, museums, libraries, or holiday events. This program is usually a capella, but can be tailored to suit your event.

"Medieval Folk Ballads"

An interactive literary arts presentation utilizing live performance and lyric writing, this program invites participants to analyze themes and recognize ballad features in popular ballads from Medieval times. After listening to and analyzing ballads like "Barbara Allan" and "Lord Randall." participants will utilize a ballad "template" to create their own ballad of our times. Study guide available.

"Songs in the Key of Culture"

A two-three hour professional development program that invites middle and high school teachers to use song across the curriculum. Based on Malinowski's principles of what holds a culture together, this presentation emphasizes the power of song to create the feel of "time and place" for students in social studies, literary arts, and arts and humanities classes.

"Music with a Cause"

This hour-long program explores American topical songs from Revolutionary times through the Civil War, through the Labor Movement of the 30s to the Folk Movement and social issues of the 60s. With sing alongs and commentary, this program is suitable for social studies classes, and lecture series.
