Who Farted?

Karin sent Aidan in to wake me up today.

"Dad, come see Charlie and Lola on the computer."
"Okay." Grunt, groan, pulling my shirt on

We sat down at the computers.
He shows me Charlie and Lola. I compliment him on his fine pictures.

He says, "Who farted?"
I say, "Not me. It must have been you."
He thinks for a second...

He says, "It must be your breath."
Could be...

Should I be afraid

I'm afraid that my son might be a bit like Calvin, smart with a twist.

Strangely, this is the link that started my thinking in this direction.

Asking Nicely

Karin and I have found out just how fast our son is learning.

Incident at Target...

Aidan picks up a Dora the Explorer DVD.

Aidan, "Mommy, I want this. Buy it."
Karin, "No, Aidan. Maybe we'll get it another time."
Aidan, "Mommy, Peeeease buyit."
Karin, "Not today, Aidan."
Aidan pulling Karin's face around to look her in the eye, "Mommy, I asking nicely!" Stubborn Glare...

Blossoming Independence

Aidan has managed to surprise us a couple of times this weekend with a question and his independent nature.

First, Karin was home with Aidan on Friday. He's been a bit out of sorts, and we're pretty sure he's been sick and under the weather. Despite his talkative nature, he wasn't able to tell us what was wrong, and he hasn't been running a temperature, so all we've really been able to do is to comfort him.

Anyway, Karin needed to do some grocery shopping. Here's how the conversation went.

Mom, "Aidan do you want to go to the store?"
Aidan, "No, thank you, mom."
Mom, "Aidan, do you want to go to the store and look for cones?" (That would be ice-cream cones, an Aidan favorite.)
Aidan, "No, thank you, mom."
Mom, "Aidan, we need grapes. Do you want to pick out the grapes?"
Aidan, "No, thank you, mom."
Mom, "Aidan, I need to go to the store. Let's get ready to go."
Aidan, "I'll stay home, Mom." This was complete with the you-go-but-I'm-not-in-the-mood tone.

Later we actually went to the store. While Karin was checking out, Aidan and I were at the front of the store people watching. A woman with a baby walked by and Aidan asked

"Where do babies come from?"
A little shocked, I replied, "Mommies."

The Wet Willy

Karin was trying to get Aidan to give me a Wet Willy today.

• I was lying on the floor pretending to be asleep.
• Aidan shoved his finger in my ear.
• Karin said, "Aidan, you need to get it wet first."
• Aidan leaned over and SPIT into my ear then shoved his finger in for good measure.

I've learned today that literal language interpretation can be very wet.
AND, I laughed so hard tears rolled down my face.

Lost

Because we don't seem to have the time or energy to watch the average two hour movie, Karin and I have decided to get TV shows through our Netflix account. Occasionally we seem to find enough time to watch a forty minute show. (Yes, current TV shows really are only 40 minutes without the commercials.)

Today we started watching the first and only season of Lost . Everyone who watched it seemed to rave about it last year, and the DVDs of the first season were released just a few weeks ago, so we added it to our list.

I've got to say that the first episode must be one of the best pilots I've ever seen. We've only watched two and a half episodes, and we can already see why people raved about it. The show is character driven with some strange setting and plot oddities to bring out the depth of the various characters.

Karin and I have been reluctant to add any new shows to our list of regularly watched TV shows; however, over the last couple of years several of our favorite shows have gone the way of the ozone, so I don't regret adding Lost to our five hours of weekly must-see-tv.

If you have the time, I certainly recommend getting Lost . (Sorry, I couldn't resist it.)

The End

I've enjoyed writing in this blog this summer, but school is starting and I'll soon be swamped with new names to learn and papers to grade. Hopefully I'll be able to add entries periodically, but for the most part I probably won't be writing much until next summer.

So, until next summer...

Sitting on the Potty

Keeping the plastic potty in our living room for three months has finally paid off.

At the end of May, Karin and Aidan and I went to Target, bought Aidan a plastic potty, had the little discussion about potty time and big-boy underwear, then let Aidan choose a few pairs of big-boy underwear. We started the 7/70 potty training plan (7 days, $70.00 to clean the carpets), but after a couple of days and a couple of poops on the floor, we realized that Aidan simply had no interest in using the potty, so we let it go (pun intended).

Yesterday, Aidan spontaneously went over to the potty, which has been moving around our living room since May; he lifted the lid, sat down, and said "Pooping." After turning bright red and grunting a bit, he stood up and went about his business. Karin and I, stunned, ran over to check his diaper. For the first time, we were happy to find a poop.

This morning Aidan did exactly the same thing. Yeah! Potty training, here we come.

Surprise!

I'm not going to describe the dialogue below, except to say that I think I'll cut off the first half second and use it as the alert sound for receiving new mail.

Oh, I also need to say that this is a fairly normal occurrence and should reassure Uncle Erik that despite being separated by several states, Aidan thinks of him often.

The Sounds of Our Lives -Part 2

I found trying to explain Aidan's funny phrases and sound effects in my last entry lacking in an untouchable essence that makes them distinctly Aidan.

So, I had the bright idea of recording today's lunch conversation on my computer. I've edited it down to several cute sound bites, many of which were the direct result of prompting; however, the best musical highlight, which is the last one here, was completely spontaneous and exactly what I was trying to explain yesterday.

Here are some of our funny phrases and musical highlights:

• Ah Haaa!

• A little nickname we've given him

• Hurray! This one was also spontaneous, but I don't remember what he was celebrating.

• A tribute to Buzz Lightyear complete with noodles flying out of his mouth. It's just like me to ask him a question as the spoon goes in.

• Yippi Skippy, Elmo!

• Yupparoni (Karin taught Aidan this as an alternative to saying, "Yes!")

• This is Aidan's normal reaction to discovery. I love it! (BTW, we were eating alphabet soup.)

Hope you enjoyed them.

These are the Sounds of Our Lives

I've always thought my life has needed a soundtrack or at least some music highlights for special events, and it appears that I've passed this thinking on to my son.

I believe it's normal for kids to say "Vroom" when riding a bike or pushing a toy truck, and Aidan does this; but he's also added some other happy sound effects to those activities he finds exciting.

Jumping off the couch usually gets a resounding "Ta Daaa!" followed by a cheerful laugh.

My favorite musical effect comes when Aidan discovers or finds something. It makes me smile every time. I don't really do it justice in this attached sound file, even after altering my voice a little. Imagine this sound coming out of an excited two-year old with a huge smile of discovery:

When Karin was pregnant with Aidan, everyone seemed excited for us, many people gave us advice, and a few told us child-rearing horror stories. No one, however, told us how much fun it would be or how much our son would make us laugh. I love being a dad.

Sweet and Garlicky

I have several friends that own The Barbecue Bible by Steven Raichlen .

To those friends, I must recommend the "Sweet and Garlicky Pork Chops" recipe on page 171. I've made it twice, and it's been fantastic both times.

To those friends and family without the book, I tried to find the recipe on the web but it's nowhere to be found, sorry. Let me know if you want it, and I'll make copies when I go to work.

Caught Looking

I read comic books. Although I read quite a variety of mainstream and independent titles, my favorite character has always been Spider-Man. A few years ago Marvel began a new line of comics all beginning with the word "Ultimate." This Ultimate Line of comics takes older, established characters and recreates them for a contemporary audience. The only Ultimate Comic I read is Ultimate Spider-Man. It's consistently well written, and the stories are character driven.

I won't bore the dear readers here with an explanation of story or any details about the various characters that make this book great. However, Ultimate Spider-Man #80 had the funniest page I think I've ever read in super-hero comics. Despite these two characters being spandex-clad super-heroes, most people will be able to relate to this scene. In brief, Spider-Man and Elektra are riding an elevator together...

Here is a link to a larger version.

A President in the Family

I wasn't around when John F. Kennedy was President, but Aidan appears to be channeling his spirit, or at least his accent.

With just a few words, our little monkey sounds like a Bostonian.

Pronounce these words with the "ahhh" sound from the doctor's visit, not the "a" sound from "banana," and soften that "r" sound so it can barely be heard; and you'll have Aidan's accent of mysterious origin.

These are the words with the most pronounced accent.
• Car
• Markers
• Colors

Whenever he says these words, I can't help but giggle inside a bit; and then, of course, I repeat them out loud.

Holy Wasabi, Batman!

On my search to find Dill Pickle Pringles, see "Weird Food is Good " entry, I stumbled across Funyuns with Wasabi .

I understand that Funyuns are meant to be eaten by famished, my-stomach-is-better-than-a-garbage-disposal pre-teens and teenagers, but I can't resist the Xtreme sport of junk food. It's just a risk I'm willing to take.

However, I'm not willing to risk a fin on the gigantic, double sized, bag that
  a) I might hate,
       and
  b) might give me a heart attack.
So when I stumbled into the Arco to pay for gas and saw the $.99 mini-bag, I had to buy it.

Here's my evaluation of Funyuns with Wasabi:
• Yup, they're good.
• Yup, they made my nose tingle.
• Yup, they cleared my sinuses.
• Yup, I'd eat them again.
• Yup, I'm glad I got the small bag.

I'm sure you know the old adage about too much of a good thing. It certainly applies to potato chips, especially Pringles and Funyuns.
