Review of Shrek 2
So I just went and saw
Shrek
2, the superstar follow up to the hit movie
called, oddly enough,
Shrek.
All
the original cast returns, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as
Princess Fiona, Eddie Murphy as Donkey and the crew of the Fairy Tale
Irregulars. New cast members include John Cleese as the King, Julie Andrews as
the Queen, Jennifer Saunders as Fairy Godmother and Rupert Everett as FG's son,
Prince Charming.
To say that the movie
works, and is just as funny, if not funnier, than the original, would be an
understatement. The first film's gentle theme of being yourself and loving
people for who, or what, they are are both present in this film. Again, the
themes are reinforced through action and humor, rather than preachy dialogue.
Really well done.
But it's with the
humor that this film really succeeds. One of the best jokes for the adults
involves a prison-break scene which uses Pinochio in a Mission Impossible Tom
Cruise parody that left me in stitches.
The best line of the movie comes
during the scene when Princess Fiona, transformed back to her human self, comes
upon a changed Donkey, now a beautiful white horse. She knows that Shrek has
been changed, but doesn't know what he looks like now. She sees Puss in Boots,
voiced by Antonio Banderas, sitting atop Donkey, casually licking
himself.
"Shrek?" Fiona
asks.
Puss turns around and lifts an
eyebrow at the princess.
"For you,
baby, I could be."
My kids had to shush
me from laughing so loud.
Great movie.
Go see it.
