Antonin Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 “New World”

Join the ESO for our final concert of 2005 as we celebrate the musical geniuses of Antonin Dvořák and Ralph Vaughan Williams! Based on Englishman Thomas Tallis's 1567 contribution to a compilation of Anglican hymns, Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is a favorite for anyone who enjoys unconventional orchestral arrangements. The work is scored for an expanded string orchestra divided into three parts: Orchestra I, a typical string orchestra; Orchestra II, consisting two players from each section; and a solo quartet. For this performance, Emory's artists in residence, the VEGA String Quartet, will perform the latter role. Following the Fantasia, the ESO will perform one of the most spectacular pieces in modern orchestral repertory: Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, better known as the New World Symphony. Written during his visit to the United States from 1892-1895, the symphony incorporates subtle Native American and African-American folk themes throughout its four distinct movements. Many have considered Dvořák's masterpiece to be the quintessential American symphony, while still others have called it "truly multinational." Any way that you view it, you're sure to be struck by the ESO's fresh interpretation of this enduring favorite.
