Symphony
THE EMORY UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
presents
The Emory Wind Ensemble Scott A. Stewart, Conductor Freddy Martin, Guest Conductor Paul Murphy, Viola, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (Richard Lorenc, Principal Double Bassist) performing... The Evolution of the Wind Symphony Friday, December 2, 2005 at 8:00 PM Price: free (no ticket required) Running time: approximately 1 hour Venue: The Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts, Emerson Concert Hall Reception to follow. Repertoire: Gabrieli: Canzon a 12 (for antiphonal brass) Mozart: Serenade in E-flat, K. 375, V (for wind octet) Hindemith: Der Schwanendreher (for viola and chamber winds) Gillingham: Stained Glass (for percussion ensemble) Persichetti: Symphony No. 6 Welcher: Spumante Join the Emory Wind Ensemble for our end-of-the-semester concert as we depict the evolution of the wind symphony throughout the past 400 years. From the late 16th-century Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzon a 12 to modern-day composer Dan Welcher's Spumante, the concert will feature both the full ensemble and several smaller groups, the sizes of which will illustrate the way in which wind ensembles were regarded at particular times. While I will be playing with the full ensemble, my smaller group will play Der Schwanendreher, an old German folk song sung around the cooking of a swan over a spit. Composed in 1935, its style reflects the era in Paul Hindemith's homeland of Germany during the dark days of the Hitler regime from which he would soon escape. For this piece, we will accompany the ASO's associate principal violist, Paul Murphy whose rendition of our unique "swan song" is articulate and refined. But don't only come to hear Paul, or me, for that matter; come to hear the EWE as you've never heard it before! For more information, visit http://www.arts.emory.edu or call 404-727-5050. As always, I look forward to seeing you there!
