I love my AMEX card.

Another true story from Richard's wallet.

My year-and-a-half-old iPod (see original dissertation) broke last month. It still works when it's plugged into my computer or the wall outlet adapter, but it doesn't carry a charge on its own for more than 1 minute. This is pretty sucky, but I'm one who's known to tell others that technology is only as perfect as its inventor.

(Begin AMEX commercial.)

I was upset but then I remembered that I bought the iPod on my American Express card.

Because I have a card with the Buyer's Assurance Plan, AMEX extends the original warranty for double the length of time of what the manufacturer provides. Apple's warranty is one year long, so they wouldn't fix it, so AMEX covers it for two years!

I promptly spoke with a representative on the phone–AMEX reps are always prompt and helpful–and she got all of my information on the iPod. A few weeks later I was asked to fax a copy of my receipt, which I did (after I got a duplicate of it from the Apple Store at Lenox Square since I purge my receipt file after a year). Then, yesterday, as if by magic, I had the ENTIRE amount that my iPod cost credited to my AMEX account! How about that!

So, the moral of the story is, buy expensive things with an AMEX card. The annual fee truly does pay off, even if you don't have something break like an iPod.
