Superman Returns!

June 2006: It's going to be awesome...and not only because I'm going to be finished with school.

"They can be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all–their capacity for good–I have sent them you, my only son."

(Do ya sense some Christ imagery there, eh? I also wonder about religious connections regarding Superman's Kreptonian name, Kal-El, since "El" is one of the older names for God.)

I don't know what it is about that old Marlon Brando set of lines (apparently recycled from the older 'Superman') from the teaser trailer. I am so sensitive to these things, I guess. The John Williams music does help with the teary-eyedness that I experience every time I see this thing.

Humanity has an enormous capacity for good–I know that we do. It is so frustrating that we choose to demonstrate our opposite tendencies so often...and so ruthlessly.

If we could only illuminate that light within ourselves...

It's idealistic; it's sappy; and it's unduly optimistic.

But it's so obviously, intrinsically and necessarily true.
