Whitefish Point

Though all of the lighthouses around Lake Superior have been helpful and, indeed, necessary, arguably none has been so critical as the light at Whitefish Point. Take another look at the map. Whitefish point juts out just at the point where the huge inland sea swings down into Whitefish Bay on the way to the St. Mary's River and the Soo Locks. There has not been a resident lighthouse keeper since the light was automated in 1970. The keeper's house, however, remains and is kept in original condition with period furnishings as part of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. The entrance to the Shipwreck Museum is in a freestanding building adjacent to the keeper's house and the light itself. It contains moving exhibits devoted to artefacts and stories of the many ships that have met their fate near Whitefish Point.

The bell from the ore-freighter Edmond Fitzgerald, which sank in a 1975 storm, takes pride of place in the museum. The story of the wreck and the recovery of the bell on 4 July 1995 may be found by clicking here. The memory of the ship and its 29
crew members has been kept alive by the singer Gordon Lightfoot. Read the text of his "Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald". After the museum, this deserted beach at the Point helped me visualize the storms that have occurred -- and will.
