| Omaha Beach was one of the two beaches where US forces landed on D-Day and by far the bloodiest. Due to a heavy fog the bombers missed most of the German positions before the troops landed which caused very heavy casualties in the first wave of troops to land as depicted in the movie "Saving Private Ryan." Also compared to Utah Beach, the hills and cliffs were much steeper which made it that much more difficult to take the German positions. The picture above left is of one of the German heavy guns that was still intact at the start of the invasion. The picture above left was taken just outside the US cemetery just above Omaha Beach where approximately 10,000 Americans are buried who died in World War II. Omaha Beach is about 6 miles long and to visit the different sectors you have to maneuver through several French villages in the area. |
