Biographical Profile
Richard has been with the University of Saskatchewan since 1978, where he devotes most of his time and a good chunk of his soul to the graduate program in Educational Communications and Technology. He has taught at elementary, secondary and post secondary levels for three decades, and he has written and co-authored seven books and more than 125 research papers, articles and technical reports in the field of educational technology. He has also developed several television series, computer-based instruction, and interactive multimedia programs and consulted extensively with clients in corporate, government and educational sectors across Canada and internationally. He is past-President of the Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC), and the former editor of the Canadian Journal of Educational Communication, and was recognized by AMTEC with their prestigious national Leadership Award. Richard received the Master Teacher Award from the University of Saskatchewan, and a 3M Teaching Fellowship, Canada's only national award for university teaching and leadership.

Currently, Richard is conducting a three-year research program about virtual learning communities. He is also collaborating on the second edition of Visual Design for Instructional Multimedia with Earl Misanchuk and Elizabeth Boling, and conducting research examining the role of instructional designers as agents of social change with Katy Campbell and Richard Kenny. He’ recently released the Canadian edition of Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching (2003) for Prentice-Hall, which was written with Peggy Roblyer.

He is an unabashed optimist about technology, but has been burned by it enough times to be cautious. He lives in Saskatoon with his wife, novelist Karin Melberg Schwier, his son James and elderly cat, Max.
