This page provides links to equipment and scouting item vendors that provide good service and pricing to scouting units. The Coleman Company offers discounts of up to 40% to non-profit organizations through their web site. Their factory outlet stores (in Loveland and Castle Rock) also provide a 10% discount to shoppers with a BSA membership card. Lakewood Scouter Ora Sheffler collects experienced uniforms and makes them available at discount through his Experienced Uniform Exchange. The Krelman Company in Pueblo, CO is a great supplier of custom embroidered patches and neckerchiefs. Eastern Mountain Sports holds a Club Day sale twice a year (in April and October), offering 20% off items in the store and on-line to members of outdoor groups. For large group orders for your unit, check with the store manager on any available discounts. Northern Mountain Supply specializes in selling last year's models of camping gear at discount prices. REI has a comprehensive collection of camping gear. They have an up to 10% credit-back dividend program for members, and also offer a 10% discount to scout groups (but you give up the dividend). Scouters report that REI will put on gear demonstrations for scout groups, especially at their flagship store in Denver. REI also rents camping gear - which can be a good way to get started in camping activities without a big upfront cash layout, and also a good way to test camping gear before you buy. Scouters report receiving discounts by showing a BSA membership card at the following local stores:
Taking Care of Your Gear1. The Law of Fluff - Items that are intended to be used in a fluffed or inflated condition in the field, should be stored that way at home. Inflatable sleeping pads should be stored inflated (open air valve) - under the bed is a good location. Sleeping bags should be stored in a large cotton sack, layed out under the bed, or hanging like bats in your basement or a closet. 2. A tent's worst enemy is moisture, leading to mildew rot. After campouts, tents should be cleaned of dirt and debris, aired out, and stored folded on a shelf (out of the stuff sack). This provides the best ventilation to take care of any remaining moisture.
