Programs/Movies with a message.

Selecting Quality Leaders

Selecting Quality LeadersFinding and growing adult leaders is a fundamental part of building any scout community. A scout unit is built around one important nexus: adults who care. The following documents provide some perspective on finding the right adults for each adult job in the unit.

Selecting Quality Leaders BSA Publication 18-981 (PDF, 844 KB) provides a deliberate process for identifying and selecting the best choices for key leaders for your youth. This six-page brochure is a companion to the BSA video of the same name (AV-02V009). The video explains the importance and distinctive values of the scouting program and the valuable role that adults play in the movement. The video is divided into three parts: Part 1 provides an overview of the selecting process for the chartered organization and their designated selection committee. Part 2 is shown to the prospective Scoutmaster (or other key leader). Part 3 can be used by the new leader to recruit additional adult assistance. In my opinion, this is best video ever produced by the BSA. The video can be checked out from your local scout service center. For a nominal fee, they will make a copy for you. This is a must-have and must-see video for every scouting unit!

Bob's Rules for Building Your Leadership Team (PDF, 68 KB) A list of ideas and lessons-learned from building leadership teams at both the unit and district levels.

Talking Points (PDF, 68 KB) These are some background talking points from a Roundtable presentation on Selecting Quality Leaders. The presentation was based on the themes of 1) scouting is a special program, 2) the boys deserve the best available adult leadership, 3) when replacing adult leaders, avoid creating a sense of desparation and 4) selecting leaders through a deliberative process is far better than taking the willing (but not necessarily competent) volunteer.

Jim Sleezer, a scouter from Oklahoma offers these ideas for being proactive (PDF, 24 KB) with developing your unit's leadership.

Everything I need to know about life (and scouting), I learned from Noah's Ark...

  1. Don't miss the boat.
  2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.
  3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
  4. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do
    something really big.
  5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
  6. Build your future on high ground.
  7. For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
  8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the
    cheetahs.
  9. When you're stressed, float a while.
  10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
  11. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.
