No film starring El Brendel can be all good (he
was a particularly irritating comedian who appeared in a number of pre-war
Hollywood films). Just
Imagine (1930) is one his most interesting -
the first science fiction talkie (and musical), made as a riposte to Fritz
Lang's Metropolis,
and including some spectacular model sets
(right). Brendel's character is struck by lightning and finds himself in 1980 -
a sci-fi future with flying cars, baby-vending machines and a trip to
Mars.It's not intended to be taken seriously, and predictive films always get a number of things wildly wrong: but I was particularly amused by the fact that though food has been replaced by a small handful of pills per meal, people are still dressing for dinner.
