No direct biblical references can be found for any of the three falls, though it is likely that He stumbled or fell several times in the walk to Golgotha given the amount of abuse already inflicted on His body as well as the specified need for Simon of Cyrene to bear the cross. | |

No references to this event can be found in the gospels. Saint Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus, refers to an act of kindness and charity towards Christ. There is a relic, venerated in the 10th/11th century at St. Peter's in Rome, said to have had the image of Christ's face on it. Though the cloth is still preserved, whatever image was on it is no longer visible. The name Veronica may actually be derived from the latin vera icon, meaning true image, which in popular use was slurred into veronica and later was assumed to be the name of the asociated woman. St. Veronica is also frequently thought to be the hemmoraging woman healed by Christ, though no factual support is available.
