Dear Parents,
I am writing to create awareness about the newest
aspect of the music ministries department for Church of the
Resurrection. It involves the children in the age group including grade
3 thru 8.
I am very aware that there are many activities 'out
there' that compete with the time and attention of children: sports,
gymnastics, dance etc. These are all very necessary as they grow toward
their full potential as contributing adults in the local church
community, and the larger society as well. It is really quite a
challenge to select and balance those activities that will most
effectively and efficiently build well-rounded character in a child.
With careful and thoughtful planning and cooperative spirit, I think
all of those can peacefully co-exist. That's why I think it so very
important that a church community provide such a place where children
can learn what it means to be a member of a team; a place where they
can be nourished and where they grow, not just spiritually, but
emotionally, mentally and psychologically as well. A place where they
are cherished, supported and loved by folks who share in a common
vision and value system.
I can think of no better way to do that, than
through the ministry of music. Musical skills and techniques, it is a
well known fact, and unlike most activities, engage both left and right
sides of the brain at the same time, as it calls forth skills that not
only tap into the creative and imaginative side, but also the thinking
mechanical side. In the music ministry program for children that I have
devised and used for 30 years, I have seen children blossom and grow in
self confidence, as they participate in team oriented activity that
encourages the cultivation of personal skills that are then applied in
a wider arena.
The skills and values that they are exposed to:
-singing: creates a sense of self-confidence,
encouraging deeper levels of positive self esteem.
-theory: awareness of the concepts of music and the
ability to apply cognitively the rudiments of the music that is being
prepared.
-playing handbells: using a special system I have
devised, anyone can play immediately; skills increase over time and as
experience is gained, more challenging levels of skill are attained.
This activity requires the use and application of both mechanical and
mental skills.
-stewardship: participation in the music ministry
organization teaches children about the importance of sharing their God
given talents and gifts, and this in turn may encourage a greater
receptivity toward spiritual values, and values that seek to go beyond
self-service.
I hope you will take a moment to talk with your
family about their possible involvement in the junior music ministry
program. If you think that this is something that may be of value and
interest then please fill out the enclosed form on the brochure and
return it as soon as possible, so that I gain understanding of how best
to proceed in my fall planning process. We plan to being our
weekly rehearsals on Wednesday following Labor Day. Thank you for your
time and consideration.
Yours in the Lord’s service,
Ron Schulz
