| A permanent return to Thailand - Jan. 14, 2006 | | Date Created: Jan 14, 2006, 04:35 PM |
My December trip to Bangkok went well, and I returned with two job offers. I accepted a public relations position at the Asian Institute of Technology, which is a graduate school about 25 miles north of Bangkok.
In the weeks I was back in the States, I was busy helping mom finish the renovation to her house that had been interrupted by two hurricanes, and I was working until midnight the night before I flew out. I also spent quite a lot of time cleaning up what few personal affairs I had in the States after being out of the country for most of the previous year and having already sold my house. At a fire-sale price, I sold my beloved car that had been sort of the only home I’d known over the past year, and I made arrangements to have Sophie, my yellow lab, flown to Bangkok once I get settled in a house that can accommodate a dog.
The departure caused a few pangs of homesickness, surprisingly. I guess it was because I know I won’t be returning to the States for a year or more, and this time things are more permanent and serious that my travels of the past.
Prae will be joining me on the 31st, and she’s thinking of opening a busness here on campus if all goes well, so we’ll see how that goes. On top of that, we came up with an idea in December to explore the possibility of exporting some products from Thailand, and we’ll both be exploring that in our spare time. |
