American Dreamz
Abstract:
Weird, disturbing, and pointless.
Body:
I rented
American
Dreamz on Netflix, partly because I wanted to
see it, but mostly because I remembered that Sarah wanted to see it and I was
trying to do something nice for her. Turned out, it wasn't so nice. She could
only stand to watch the movie for 20 minutes, and although I finished it, I wish
I hadn't.
American
Dreamz is a story where a reluctant terrorist,
egomaniacs, and the President of the United States cross paths on national
television. Each of these characters is a cartoonish stereotype with
predictable behavior: the terrorist is really a nice guy; the all-American girl
is scheming and power-hungry; and the President is an incompetent (mostly)
controlled by his handler. Aside from the terrorist, who is the only character
in the movie who faces a believable dilemma, the characters are poorly acted and
never pull the audience in, which doesn't help this nearly two hour movie go any
faster. Every scene feels drawn out with details about characters we don't care
about. And when the climax finally comes, we're hardly surprised or interested,
only disturbed by the inhumanity of the characters' behavior, but not in a way
that reveals anything.
This movie was
bad. Avoid it at all costs.
