The Evil Christian Rock Business
Abstract:
No better than anyone else.
Body:
Two weeks ago I watched
Disciples
on the Discovery Times Channel. It's a one-hour documentary about the Christian
rock business. I was interested in it because Christian rock in particular, and
the Christian youth movement in general, is growing rapidly, and in my opinion,
scarily. But I had no idea how evil some people in the Christian rock business
are.
They interviewed one man from a
Christian record label about what they were trying to accomplish. I expected a
fluffy answer about bringing the message of God to the people, but instead he
told us that they were using Christian rock, along with a slew of manipulative
marketing techniques, to covert people to Christianity. What shocked me was his
openness about his willingness to use any means to achieve his ends. We all
know most companies with something to sell are willing to use any means to
convert potential buyers, but those companies also have some sense that such
manipulation is wrong and they try to conceal their true objectives. But the
Christian rock business seems willing to admit to doing whatever it takes to
spread God's word, whether it's evil or not. In their urge to spread their
religious message, they've lost their way, turning to any means necessary,
including means their own religion would consider evil, to achieve their goals.
They think that God is on their side, they can do no wrong, and anything they do
must be good because it is done in the name of
God.
I seem to remember this story from
somewhere. The Crusades, the Inquisition, the Conquests. Each time Christians
were willing to violate the word of their religion because they believed God was
on their side. And outside of Christianity, we've seen others use the same
reasoning: Islamofascists, Nazis, Communists. Given the dangerous precedents,
I hope the Christian rock business falters.
