Gordon's Media Rating System

Please be aware that this document is no longer being actively maintained and it very likely no longer represents the views of Gordon Worley. I will not fix errors in it, discuss it with you, or generally even respond to e-mail about it. Having been warned, I'd rather you read this document from me rather than a cache or mirror somewhere, so I'm not going to delete it. I hope you understand and proceed with appropriate caution.

When reading my reviews of things you may wonder, what does that three three thumbs thing mean and how is that a rating. This document is a guide to how I rate media (books, movies, etc.).

I use three thumbs because this is a transhumanist joke. You see, a transhuman might have more than the normal number of hands to do more work, thus I jest that I can give three thumbs up. As it turns out, three thumbs come in handy with my rating system.

If a work gets zero thumbs, it plain sucks. It was not enjoyable at all and probably wasn't worth taking in once. One thumb up means that I like the work. A lot of stuff falls in here. For example, comedy movies. They generally aren't great movies with complex plots that make you think, but just fun to watch. I'd be willing to sit through it again or, if a book, think back on it or recommend it to others. Two thumbs up means that is was good. There was a good plot, engaging story, made me think, all of that. There are only a handful of works that I'd place here and are worth multiple looks, reads, whatevers. If something gets three thumbs up, then it goes above and beyond the average. A work like this rarely comes along. I have that third hand to do more work, so when it can take time to give a thumbs up, you'd better play attention. Thumbs down are really bad. If I give thumbs down, this means you should avoid the work at all cost. If the movie comes on TV, find something else to watch. If you see this book, buy it and use it for toilet paper. Thumbs down are reserved for those works that can have a negative impact on the reader/viewer.

In case you don't like my rating of a work, then just keep that to yourself. This is my system and my opinion. Get your own Web page and post your own review if you really think mine is that bad.
