The worst video of the year?
I'm flipping channels on my TV ... it's 11:00
p.m., and I ought to watch the news, but I watched news for hours earlier today
and I know that it's really just going to be more of the same. Significant
stuff (sort of) happened in Canada today, and that can be read about elsewhere.
Anyway, I just flipped onto one of the music video channels, and I was shocked
to see two things in quick succession. First, I was shocked that there was
actually a video on. Lately it seems like all this channel shows is utterly
vapid television shows either imported from the States (although that Bands
Reunited one is kind of interesting) or worse, made locally and consisting of
just a list of random stuff about celebrities I don't care about. However, for
once there are videos on.
The second
thing that surprised me was the the video that was on was not a commercial. You
see, it was a video for this new Celine Dion song that Air Canada is using to
try and inspire people to take their infuriating flights where their crusty
flight crews treat you like crap and they give you next to no points for the
privilege. Anyway, the song consists of about three separate lines that Celine
sings over and over. It's perfect for a commercial ... but not so much for a
real song. To top that off, the video looks like an Air Canada commercial.
It's filmed in the new terminal at Pearson, and instead of making the airport
look good (like Charles de Gaulle looks really cool in U2's Beautiful Day
video), it just looks like a 3 minute long Air Canada commercial, and just
reminds me of all the flights I'm going to have to take out of Pearson over the
next month. So it's like it makes my skin crawl because of the song, the video,
and emotionally too. Bleah. I will now blot it out of my mind.
