Some actual progress!Yesterday I had the pleasure of knitting
pretty much all day. I was feeling a bit misanthropic, so I didn't want to go
outside and start yelling at people who were irritating me. Particularly since
I think that I was finding almost everything irritating! I went to a party on
Friday night that was pretty awkward, and I came away feeling like everything
that I'd said was wrong and goofy. That doesn't happen to me too often, but I
felt like a real dope. The bright side of it all was that I got some knitting
accomplished!
The biggest news is that my Rogue is finally blocking. It's going to take a while to dry because I don't have a great way to get water out of stuff and I didn't want to do a lot of squeezing. I guess this is one time I should be happy that I have radiators in my apartment. They make it SO HOT in here, so I've turned them all on and I'll just have a bit of a tropical day. Of course, for some reason the heat isn't actually on at the moment. Here's the main body of Rogue blocking:
I wish that iBlog had a way to make a thumbnail and then you could click on it for a bigger picture. Anyway, I was worried that the flash would wash out the nice shading in the cables, but I think that it turned out all right, although I'm not sure that can be seen from this picture. :) JoHunter asked me the other day what yarn I used for this project, so I thought that I would record this for myself and anyone else who might be curious as well. It's stuff that I found in the basement of one of my LYSes. It's 100% wool, comes on cones, and was manufactured by Spinrite according to the label on the inside of the cone. The best part is that it sells for $7 a pound, which means that I made my Rogue for about $14. I actually went crazy and bought cones of this stuff in a dark purple and a brown as well. I think that this is the same yarn that Jenna used for one of the samples of Rogue that she shows on her website, and she has more details about the origin of this stuff there. I also finished my first pair of mittens!
I've got them on the radiator in the bathroom because I would like to be able to wear them today when I go out. I made them using the soft mitts kit from Fleece Artist, however I followed the mitten pattern from 'The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns', so I guess I really made them from a double strand of Mo and blue-faced Leicester. The pattern that comes on the label around the yarn that comprises the kit is a bit pathological. I checked two different kits the last time that I was at my LYS, and one kit specified 4.5 mm needles while the other one specified 5 mm. When I did my swatches I found that 5 mm needles gave me fabric that was just a wee bit more dense than I wanted, so I actually knit up my mittens on 5.5 mm needles. I am kind of happy that I lost the label and had to do my own thing anyway because I think that the kit pattern might not have made me happy. I had so much yarn left over that I decided to make myself a tam out of it as well. Unfortunately, I am less than halfway done and I've run out of yarn! I plan to run out to the store today in search of the blue faced Leicester so that I can try to finish. I've got some Mo that is in the same colourway already, so I think I'll be okay there. Finally, all of my WIPs got some attention yesterday. I worked most of a 16 row pattern repeat on Charlotte, so there's some hope that will be done for Christmas when it is meant to be gifted. I even worked on my Cabin Fever Celtic Braid socks that haven't seen the light of day in over a month. I decided to use them to teach myself how to knit in the round on two circulars, and while I'm managing the technique without any issues (although I haven't got to the heel turn yet!), I am still having some needle issues that I need to work out. I think that the moral of the story is that long needles are a nice way to go, and smooth joins are really important, which of course rules out cheaper circs. I even did a few rows on the Travel Satchel yesterday. I was pretty tired by the time I got to it, though, so it didn't get much attention, unfortunately. After I dropped a stitch and had to repair that mess I decided that I should just go to bed or something. You know, I haven't been in a yarn store in weeks, really. It's definitely time for me to go take a visit. :) Posted: Sun - December 5, 2004 at 12:25 PM | |
