Welcome to the Sukkahs in Sharon Homepage

"Ufros Alenu Sukat Shlomacha-
Spread over us the tabernacle of thy peace"

Return to Sukkahs of the world, our site for 2006

What a wonderful description of our relationship with G-d, and of the function of the Jewish holidays!  The holidays give us a chance to participate in that peace, and the Sukkah is a prime symbol and embodiment of that peace.  I am privileged to live in the small town of Sharon, Massachusetts in the USA.  Sharon has a wonderful secret-it is one of the most Jewish locations  on the planet.  Sixty to seventy percent of the 17000 plus residents are Jewish.  Whatever your flavor of Judaism, there is a Shul and a Sukkah to match. A Sukkah is a shelter from the physical elements and, more importantly from the daily turbulence of our busy lives. Confined within its walls, we are given  a chance to open up both to G-d and to each other.  Slow down, and open yourself up to its physical and emotional warmth and charm!  This web site is your online walk through Sharon during Sukkot.  Please enjoy it!

One of the pleasures of the holiday of Sukkot in Sharon is to behold the numerous Sukkahs-many in plain sight in the driveways or front yards, others in the backyards peeking out-thus we have two categories of Sukkahs, the visible ones, and the peek-a-boo Sukkahs. If it is not visible from the street, it can be thought of as an invisible Sukkah, a third category. I am proud to share a Sukkah Gallery with pictures of the fifty-two visible Sukkahs in Sharon for your enjoyment. Go to Sukkahsindetail for interior shots of Six Happy Sukkahs, and a model Sukkah.  On Sunday evening October  23, 2005, after a couple of friends made the suggestion,  I went out to photograph Sukkahs at Night which may be seen here:   Sukkahs at Night.    On Shmini Atzeret, Sharon was visited by a nor'easter, with winds that gusted to 60 miles an hour.  This has given rise to forth  category, the Blown Down Sukkah. HERE are a couple of examples. Last but not least, a dusting of snow that arrived during the Shabbos after Sukkos has given the evanescent category of Sukkahs in the Snow

Sukkos is not just about Sukkahs.  The etrog is an integral part of the holiday.  And of course, an etrog is transported in an etrog box.  Here is a movie that features Sam Natansohn benching Lulav and Etrog, followed by an Etrog box gallery. Thank you Sam. Please send  pictures of your etrog box to sukkahsinsharon@gmail.com. Include your name. Although Sukkahs are fun, the holiday of Sukkos has a serious side, as Cantor Steve Dress pointed out on Hoshanah Rabbah, the last day of the holiday  At the end of the movie, you will see two pictures of willow branches, one picture with and one without leaves.  When we beat the willow branches on the ground to remove their leaves, we are symbolically trying to shake off our sins from the past year. Judaism gives us a chance to get off to a fresh start, if we will take it.
