I remember attending Touro Synagogue in my hometown Newport, RI many years ago. I have a vague memory of the large Sukkah on the side of the Shul. The thick canvas walls were so sheltering that I barely realized that I was outside except for the grass underfoot and the temperature. It is hard to recapture the magic feeling of the table spread with Challah, Magen David wine, and herring. It has left vague but pleasant imprint that will always be with me. Ou sont les souccotes d'antan?
