Mission
This web site and the expedition and media projects behind it are dedicated to the memory of Woodrow Wilson Sayre, the first American to attempt Mount Everest. His 1962 expedition inspired thousands of mountaineers and adventurers worldwide after his expedition narrative, Four Against Everest, was published in 1964. His celebrated book has been out of print for 30 years, and this classic of American pluck and luck has been all but forgotten. No more!
Climb with us in 2005
Our plans to launch a reenactment of Sayre's 1962 expedition are finally coming to life. Three of the four expedition slots are filled, and we are looking for just one more climber, and an alternate, to accompany us over Nup La and attempt Everest's North Face next April and May. Two of the members of the 1962 expedition will also trek to Everest Base Camp next spring to meet the reenactment team. Our plan to film the effort in high definition have just been boosted with the announced release of the Sony HDR-FX1, a small high definition video camera that will produce an image of similar compatible with Sayre's 16mm footage from 1962.
We are serious about retracing Sayre's 1962 route from the upper Dudh Kosi under Cho Oyu to Everest's north side, an approach pioneered by none other than Sir Edmund Hillary in 1952. This beautiful high altitude climb along the remote West Rongbuk glacier under the world's highest peaks will provide both a visual reward and unparalleled acclimatization for our oxygen-less Everest attempt. If the opportunity to climb with us seems up your alley, send me an email as soon as possible.
Sponsorships
We continue to look for sponsors of high quality climbing and film production equipment to support our expedition, film, and book projects. We will only carry the lightest and most durable gear, but what a prize to be included on our equipment list! Film and book distributors are also sought.

2005 Everest Trek
You can be a part of the reenactment of the First American Everest Expedition, without risking your life. Come trek to Everest Base Camp in late April 2005, just a few kilometer hike from the famous Rongbuk monastery. Join Roger Hart and Hans-Peter Duttle as they share their stories of the 1962 climb from the very scene of their trials and triumphs. Help cheer on the reenactment team and be a part of its documentary film. This trek will be professionally organized and lead. If you would like more information, send me an email.
Roger Hart is published
Original expedition member Roger Hart's memoirs of a charmed explorer's life have just been published by Simon & Schuster. The Phaselock Code is available at all major bookstores. Hart's experiences on Everest in 1962 figure centrally into his thoughtful analysis of life's interconnectedness. This philosophical and scientific treatise has been a decade-long struggle for Roger, and we have enjoyed reading it.
Contacts and Connections
Send e-mail to Rand McNeely or call him in the USA at 617-417-9020 or in Canada at 604-617-8624. You may also contact 1962 expedition team member Hans-Peter Duttle.
