R.C. Barajas - published work These are the published works of R. C. Barajas to date. The first piece, "The Procedure", launched an enjoyable relationship to the Washington Post Magazine. Two articles followed, "Rescuing Jonah", and "Disorderly Conduct". She is currently working on several short stories, and is staring down the gullet of a novel she is contemplating writing - if she loses touch with reality entirely. "The Procedure" was not an easy piece, being a personal account of an abortion. It was the author's first published piece, and her first taste of hate mail. "Rescuing
Jonah" is a piece about a boy with cerebral palsy and his mother,
Margie. It is a glimpse into their lives and hopes, as, through an intensive
type of therapy, they try to help Jonah gain control over his damaged
body. It was a humbling experience to write this, to get to know Jonah
and his parents. It
is a tragic addendum to this story that the day before it was published,
Margie died in childbirth of an
amniotic embolism. "Disorderly Conduct" examines the rocky development and vitriolic path of a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit. It was the author's most intimate contact with deposition transcripts to date, an experience she is not eager to repeat. Hard copy reprint of this piece was requested by the law firm of Hogan & Hartson, as well as by George Mason University professor Y. Demory for use in a Commercial Law course in 2002. "They thought they had adopted an ordinary pet. Then they discovered her secret identity."
