going nuclear

It’s not as though you heard it here first, but they’re up to no good. Really.

Yeah, the filibuster wasn’t written into the Constitution, and yeah, it’s been employed times past to thwart motions you and I would have got behind had we been there, and yeah, both wings of the former duopoly have made noises times past about changing these venerable Senate rules. But guess what: cooler heads on the majority side always whispered “but next time we’re in the minority—what then?” and the noises died down.

But now Bill “Cat Killer” Frist has a more seductive message to whisper, and this is: “Suppose we’ll never be in the minority again? Suppose I can guarantee this? Wouldn’t it be glorious to brush aside the rump opposition without a thought to their eventual revenge, if we have the means to foreclose the possibility?”

What could he be thinking?

If they pull the trigger you may be assured that these thugs never intend to be in the minority again, and that they believe they have the means to prevent that catastrophe well in hand. Once they understand that they’ve made it to the Promised Land...well, drilling for oil there is the least they’ll do.

At some point before 2010 I suspect that a large fraction of educated people (excluding journalists, who will most of them continue to sing the praises of our ancient liberties for as long as the subsidies roll in) will understand, whether or not they’re prepared to use the term “fascism,” that we’ve arrived there at last.
